thanks... I recognize that part, just never heard it called a gooseneck before. In fact I never heard it called anything before!

How about wrapping a piece of soft aluminum sheet around the bar and clamping a visegrip on it, then just smack with a hammer? The aluminum would have to be thick enough so the visegrip teeth don't hit the bar, of course.
