I primer the rim in black first and then mount the tire.
After the tire is on I tape it off and then paint the rim gloss black.
I cannot do it before hand because the process of installing the tire
would badly scratch the edge of the rim.

I was thinking of having a space saver tire mounted to a rim that was black power coated. Just wondering if that would still scratch up the rim?

Have you ever used an old Coates 40-40 type machine? With the nylon protector you have a slim chance of not doing damage but if the tire fights as much as I'd expect than you'll have scratches...
