First off what makes you think the trans is garbage ? It's a 727 with an OD on the back.

Also you are correct , OD pops off the back , you don't have to disassemble the entire trans to make the swap as the mainshaft is the same length whether it's a 4x2 or a 4x4 UNLIKE a 727 ... BUT there is a selective shim that goes in there that you are supposed to measure for with a special tool and install the correct one . Now you could just use the shim that is in the tail you want to swap on , but it may not work properly ...
