The KB hyperuetcics need a wide top ring gap because the ring is moved closer to the piston crown (where the heat is) and the material doesnt tranfer heat very well.

Keeping the second ring gap wide is almost always a good idea on any piston. It provides an escape path for gas pressure that can build up between the top two rings. This will help keep the top ring seated on the ring land of the piston (where it needs to be to seal well).

Take a look at some second ring gap specs on modern diesel engines.

I would gap the 2nd ring at .004/inch of bore plus .004. I think that ends up around .022-023. On the filing.. by assembling yourself you're saving a bunch. I think my ring filer cost $30. IMO, it's not worth doing without the proper tools. Thye are that important to good power production.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.
