put your finest file in a vise & move the ring "in" toward the tang of the file with contact in that one direction only. File one end only & keep it square & deburr it when you get the gap you want. I use .003 per inch of bore (2nd ring).EDIT each time you pull the ring out butt it together & that'll let you know if you are filing it square.
