I would guess you are getting interference from something. May or may not be the alternator, I have seen electric water pumps and fans cause all sorts of issues with crank triggers. Best thing to do is to isloate the crank trigger wires as much as you can.

To answer the question about the pickup being bad and the car running not liekly but I never say never. Is the wheel in good condition and the pickup wiring?
