An external cooler is always a good idea with any higher than stock stall converetor. Anything around 2500rpm will be fine for the street. You could go as high as 2900 rpm without a problem in a stock application. Obvioulsy mileage will suffer a bit, but usually not a primary concern if you want a little more zip.
