So I found a Kurt 5" vise with soft and hard jaws for $250. Worth getting?

as already said, Kurt is the Vice of Vices ! [not THAT kind of vice ! biggrin]
be sure to look it over closely. and if it shows signs of repeatedly milling or drilling into it, leave it there !
one pet peeve of mine is someone hacking up a vice or fixture by carelessly crashing the cutting tool into it ! mad
for starters, as has also been said, get the biggest vice you can afford. however, small vices are also useful.
if possible, get vices with replaceable jaws. that allows one to have a selection of jaws you can choose from, depending on the work you are doing.
jaws can come, or be made from, aluminum, plastic, brass, soft copper, etc.
air vices are also available, and can come in handy in production work, as well as being fast to adjust to different widths of your work piece.
