A low first gear gives you a quicker reving engine
in LOW gear.. so you make it quicker to the
torque range of the engine... then you shift
earlier and have to have TORQUE to pull longer
in high gear.. it MAY not change the rpm of the
run... a gear change changes the whole run which
is a multiplier

Bottom line is always... HP to weight ratio..
then make it efficient
