Missouri requires vehicles to pass a safety inspection every two years (they also have separate inspection and maintenance program in the St. Louis area). Missouri Revised Statutes § 307.350. The Missouri Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection Regulations Manual provides for rejection of a vehicle without a catalytic converter as equipped by the manufacturer. It also provides for rejection of certain vehicles with replacement engines that are not equivalent to factory. There may be loopholes, but these tend to be harder to find. I looked at all this after seeing the Doomsday article. These issues can be a real pain in areas like Phoenix metro, not so much in states like Alabama and Kansas.

As you say, many hot street cars could probably be cited for some equipment violation or other. An issue since the early days of hot rodding - scenes in America Graffiti. But at some point there is going to be a line.

The unlimited cars in DW are epic feats of engineering and craftsmanship, and the efforts to go the distance are monumental and impressive. But if DW unlimited is about the
fastest "street car" (setting aside "legal") it may have jumped the shark. In fact, the results of daily driver seem to indicate that the true 10 second street car is still pretty rare. Just my
