Did you check the intermediate shaft (gear wear) and bushing (shaft wear) when the dist was out? (jumpy timing)

The sync can be set without a tool.It only has to be in a 5 degree window.Align the rotor with the #1 on the cap.It should be the trailing edge of #1.If you miss it you will run very rough (or no start) and it will not get better.You can move the dist at idle and know immediately when it is out.
