Seriously? Drove From Memphis to San Diego with 4.10 gears and no overdrive.
NO PROBLEMS.
But it wasn't my momma's car I was driving either.
I'm not saying you can't, and I guess it doesn't bother some people. I have a '80 Mirada with 3.91's and long trips at 3500+ rpm and the loud exhaust get on my nerves after a while. I never had a problem but I guess I worry too much with the engine buzzing for hours like that.
I had 3.55's in my 5th ave and hated it....cruise at 75mph (5 over on the freeway here in MI) was ~3200 RPM with 27" tires and lockup tranny. my exhaust wasn't too loud, but my ears were ringing after 1/2 hour....adding an OD helped a lot (A500)
FWIW, a stock brand new charger R/T 5.7 will pull ~5.4-5.6 0-60 and 13.5-14.0 1/4 mile time...a brand new SRT8 charger will be about a second faster in each....
it would take a very pretty warmed up 400 with some deep (3.91-4.10) gears to match a stock brand new R/T...
if you still want it drivable on the highway, I'd look at adapting an A518 (46RH) tranny--the .69 OD would make 3.91's feel a lot like your 2.76's on the highway, while increasing your first gear torque multiplication by 42%
Ok so more like 6 seconds with aluminum heads, cam, intake, headers, exhaust?
1973 Dodge Charger SE 400 automatic transmission. Curb weight: 3800 lbs. All stock so far.
Goal: Reliable everday driveable warmed up 400 as close to 400hp as possible, then a 470 stroker if need be.
Don't protect a feminist when the collapse comes!
