The tapered ring compressors are so nice and easy to use. Broken rings are a thing of the past. Think of it as a cost of building the motor. And a tool you will have for the rest of your life. Including any future rebuilds.

If you do a lot of different size motors/pistons, then the locking pliers type with several bands are the next best thing.

this is the point i was trying to make

the tapered compressors are great but when i worked in an engine rebuilding shop it was not practical and the plier type will work decent you just need to be careful. we used to upset the bottom of the band with a pair of dykes so there was a little part sticking out to keep the band from wanting to go into the bore which was the biggest problem i ever saw with them. come to think of it of they would just spotweld a little nub on them it would be great
