Ring compressor recomendations - 10/08/12 06:22 AM
As the title suggests - whats a really good one or type? I've got a crappy conventional one that worked OK on Datsun 76mm pistons but is sh**y on 4.25" pistons.
the tapered ones look pretty decent, not east to find local though..
thanks, Evan

it depends on what you want. tapered is by far the best, there is also the split tapered though i've never used them so i don't know what the range is. the plier type can have a big range and work ok as long as you're careful
as for finding local you could order any of them online

The tapered ring compressors are so nice and easy to use. Broken rings are a thing of the past. Think of it as a cost of building the motor. And a tool you will have for the rest of your life. Including any future rebuilds.
If you do a lot of different size motors/pistons, then the locking pliers type with several bands are the next best thing.

On E-bay or Racers Outlet - "PRC" #41-4000-kit = $87.99 and consists of 4 tapered compressors (4", 4.030", 4.040", and 4.060".

This is the style I use... it gives you a small bit
of adjustment so if I bore the engine it will still
work(this isnt the size I use but the same thing)...
it is the tapper style

I purchased a Summit brand adjustable tapered compressor for my last engine build. I was very pleased with it. Much much nicer than the cheap band style.

thanks guys, thats quite a list!
I figured the tapered one would be what I end up with. If stock pistons are 4.250 (I think - should measure) & mine are .030 over I assume I need the 4.280 tapered or do you want one slightly larger than the oversized piston?
Oh yeah, going in a 69 383 HP motor, badger 10:1 pistons.
Thx. E

Get one intended for the bore size you will end up with, 4.28 in your case.
