I had a 88 4wd pickup, but I thought you had to push down on the shifter to get it to move back and forth. I could be wrong, been awhile, long while. But I agree, you have to move the shifter before it signals the front axle to lock together. Spray the bejebees out of the linkage, and see if it moves.
