I agree with this 110%! I've always preferred to do my own work, then there is only one person to blame when it blows, and you can learn for yourself without the cost of an engine builder/assembler. In all of the engines I have done, my only casualty has been a block that split at the crank mains.

Research it well. There are enough articles and books out there to help you in the course.
