Try loosening the side cover without removing it. Then tap it up from the bottom rear area with a hammer. There is an interference fit on the 1-2 lever that will hit the reverse arm sometimes. NOTE: When putting the trans back together, ALWAYS put it in reverse before installing the side cover. After you tap the side cover upwards, try manually shifting it into reverse. If it goes leave it there and tighten the side cover bolts.
