The plate must help somewhat,it is the same idea that the Flowcooler brand uses.
Here is a pic,from left to right of Edelbrock"s pump,the often hated 440 Source,and my new favorite 8 blade with a plate behind it. This fixed the cooling issues on my tow rig. It is a Tuff Stuff Supercool brand.
