I had a helper fuel pump on my Cuda years ago. It was a low pressure pump installed close to the tank that I only to prime my carbs for a better starting. The gas evaporates in the bowls in between drives now days and extra cranking is not something I prefer. I just don’t want to leave it on and would like one that will not impede the stock fuel pump flow when off. Anyone have a pump they like to use?

I use a Holley gerotor. I have it hooked to a switch under the dash for manual operation and have a micro switch on the Dominator's secondaries. Most of the time, the car runs on the mechanical pump. The electric is used for priming and for full throttle. The mechanical pulls through the electric gerotor just fine.

I am not a fan of the Clicity Clack fuel pumps, they are prone to failure.

That said, you could wire it to a start power wire, so it would only come on when you are cranking the engine. The only other option is to wire it to a switch.

Or, buy an electric pump and put a pressure regulator in line.

But if you wire the electric pump to the start circuit, you would still have to crank the engine until the carb is full. That may be a little faster than doing the same thing with the mechanical pump, but would still require more cranking time than with other methods.

I mounted one of the ‘clickty clacks’ one right under alternator on the 65. For now I touch the red wire to alt hot stud till it fills up the clear filter (I’ll do a ground switch later with red wire hooked to alt) starts and runs great with no fuel restrictions. They make a cheap one for my Gator with 5/16” in-out lines for $18 off Amazon. The Carter pump will work too back at tank, run hot wire to a light wire (hot source) and ground up to dash, pull on lights then push button. Only on with button, No power drop that way. If you want it to run it continuously use a starter relay instead, if no battery in trunk a heavy wire is needed from front, small wire to activate. Many ways to work it

I used a Carter P4070 for years and had no issues. I currently keep one around for transferring gas from tank to gas cans and back when i need to.

You can wire your relay to an oil pressure switch, so you don't have to worry about forgetting to shut it off. It will run when the key is turned on, and it will turn off when the oile pressure reaches the limit on the switch you use.

Ran one forever on a few street/strip cars that had 1/2" fuel lines.
Just had a switch for it, worked well for priming, didn't have to run it all the time (cars retained mech pumps).
I use a regulator any time there's an added.

The Airtex 8016S specifies "it can be used as a priming pump that a mechanical pump can pull through when not in use."

Not sure on the brand I used a few years back but it was like the one you showed and it didn`t last long at all. Threw it in the trash.

For filling the bowls, I use an eyedropper or a plastic squeeze bottle like what you'd sometimes see for mustard/ketchup.
My squeeze bottle's dedicated for gasoline, been using it for years with no problems.
Some folks don't want to pull the air cleaner to prime the carb, which is where the electric pump is handy.
I've used the Carter (72 GPH, IIRC) and Holley 110 pumps with mech pumps, no problems.

Good point here (albeit a manual effort one), as it happens I literally do this with my Carter TQ 9800 carb, and while this works great I still find it exceedingly annoying when this is required even after the car sits there for a mere two weeks!!! yikes...

Sort of have been thinking of replacing that manual effort with an automated "give it a bowl re-fill" solution.
