I just picked up an unsilenced air cleaner, just trying to determine if it's an original or not.

It came off an untouched '69 Charger that was purchased back in the '80's. It is in beautiful shape.
There is not a scratch on the black wrinkle finish paint. The decal appears to be an original, it has a black push-in breather with the "tongs" on the underside, and the original hose with the yellow stripe.
There is a stamp on the inside on the lid that says "Made in Canada". I have a repro one on one of my cars, and it does not have this stamp.

Does anyone know if that stamping was found on the originals? If so, this is an extremely mint original piece.
Thanks!

Shouldn't the breather be chrome?

IMO that's way too nice of shape, especially the decal to be a 40+ year old original (to the car), maybe a NOS part but hard to believe it's original to the car. If it is then I'll say it now WOW

My experience on these is that the originals have a much more pronounced bend on top where the air filter rests. The repops are almost angled there.

This is what a decal looks like on a 41 year old air cleaner

Chrysler had these re-issued through the Moperformance program some time back.
They were manufactured by Fram in Canada and came chromed from Moperformance.
When the chrome version sales lagged, these were offered in black, but not wrinkle finish, just a smooth satin finish black.
The one you have may possibly be the later version, painted wrinkle finish by someone and the reproduction decal added.
There is a slight variance in the tube off the side in original run wrinkle finish one and the later run unit.

I bought one when they were first reintroduced and it appeared to have a light wrinkle finish on it , I thought.

isnt it possible it was replaced with a aftermarket chromed piece and placed on a shelf for many years and then when the car was sold it was thrown in on the deal with whatever extra paerts the seller had laying around?

although the breather cap looks way more used up then the air cleaner.

Thanks guys for all the replies.

I can see that the decal print is different on this one than the other original that was posted. That's a big help in solving this mystery.

It definitely wasn't first a chrome plated one & then painted. The inside is painted black. I'm going to remove the repro one on my car & do a side by side comparison. That one is also a correct wrinkle repro, it came wrinkle finish right out of the box. However it does not have the Canada stamp on it. If there are any noticeable differences in the stamping of the lid then I would think it's safe to say this is an original. If it's identical, then this could be a repro. I will update this thread later on today with this info. I will probably be selling this in the very near future, so I'm open to offers.

Here's a shot of the baseplate, JohnRR. It has a galvanized coating. Very minor wear.

I just looked at my NOS in the box Mopar Performance air cleaner made 8/1990 and it has a base just like above and a Made In Canada stamp like shown. I have several originals and they have black bases.

So Bill what do you think should the judges knock off points for non-indented, non-black base plates from here on..................

No doubt about it, the original box for my NOS DC air cleaner has chrome and black air cleaner pictures on it!
