I had the same issues, although not as severe. I drilled two small holes in the cap, just inside the rubber seal. Seemed to take care of the issue.

hi guys, both of my cars are doin the same thing.. my 70 charger after running engine and breaking in new cam and heating up engine. all the sudden the gas expanded in tank and came gushing up fuel neck and overflowing all over quarter panel and continued doin it til 15-20 min after car was shut off...why? also my 70 bee was just sitting in garage..sun beating on back end of car..after awhile fuel expanded built up pressure and started leaking out gas cap...im puzzled.please help moparts
hmph...what a conundrum!
There can only be one explanation:
You're car is running SO efficient, it actually produces fuel. You should think of getting a patent on that before big oil and a cabal of middle eastern sheik's hunt you down and bang you over the head w/ a 100mpg carburetor!

There is a vent tube or at least there should be. Look there for the problem first.

I don't think the factory ever vented the fuel tank to the trunk. That would be very dangerous.
The vent on a charger runs out of the sending unit, thru the trunk (via the filler neck) and hooks up to the gas cap.
Here's an Idea. Run the car with the gas cap open and see what happends. If it still gushes then your sending unit port might be clogged.

Not trying to be a smartass, but you can't vent the tank into the tank. So the vent line doesn't connect to the filler tube or the sending unit. It has to vent somewhere else. I'm not familer with your car but I am sure of what I said. The second fittings on sending units are for fuel return if so equipped, not for venting.
sorry that is correct don't know what I was thinking,,,, the Charger vent tube runs from the top of the filler neck down thru the trunk.

Make sure the mini vent tube at the top of the filler neck inside the trunk that goes down/thru the trunk floor is open/dont drill/alter the gas cap/dont fill the tank so high EDIT dont need a tank sending unit w the extra nipple unless you plan to add a return line from the carb which is a good idea (esp if vapor lock/overheating probs) but it will not help your situation

thanks for the last replies, that helped. my sender doesnt have a vent port on it. i will search for a new one that has a vent on it. and hook it up to the factory vent tube on the filler neck. i thought the vent on the neck was all there was to it. i didnt know it went to the sender.these damn repop parts are never correct !!!
There is no vent tube on the sender, the tank has 2 vent lines on it , one connects to the line that goes thru the trunk the other connected to a small J shaped line that hangs on the shock crossmember.

My honda did that and I finally changed the cap and the problem was gone.
can't change the cap on a Charger like that. The vent is allll the way up at the top of the filler neck. Have you blown out the line w/ some air? might have some junk trapped in it. Also did you open the cap and run the car?
