So I originally was thinking of drilling a hole in the sending unit and welding in a tube for the return line.
But having just gotten a new sending unit and looking at it, I don't see a whole lot of room to put one.

I saw the one that takes part of the filler neck, but that means routing new line all the way to the back of the car.

So I was thinking of punching a hole in the gas tank near the sending unit, taking the whole tube from the old sending unit and jb welding it in place there.

Is there any reason not to do it this way?

I drilled a hole in the sending unit plate and mounted an AN fitting in there.

I used the filler tube, but it turned out really easy to do. I used aluminum line though...

sorry already have line to the back of the car. Meant to say from the front of the gas tank to the rear of the gas tank since this one fill behind the license plate. 65 coronet.

cucu- thanks for the idea. Might be easier than welding, but it looks real tight for space. Have to see how big the fitting will be.
I don't want to rain gas on the electronics/resistor for the sending unit.

Why not get a 3/8" sending unit with the return fitting already in place?

they don't make one for the 65 b-body. already looked.
Plus the ones they did make only had 1/4 inch return. I want to use the 5/16th.

would it be possible to drill out the 1/4" nipple & solder in a 5/16" one?

Maybe, but they don't make one for a 65 b-body. The ones they do make with the return are for other cars, so I didn't check them out.

Disregard this if I did not understand what you were trying to do. Here is a rough diagram how I set my system up. Mine fills behind the plate as well, so it is probably a similar setup. I used 1/2" return line since I run an FI pump.

I added a 3/8" return to a stock sending unit per an old Mopar Action Article. Which goes something like this .........

First drill a small pilot hole about an 1/8"

then use a tapered center punch with a small piece of pipe or socket to support the sending unit under the pilot hole.

Then tap the center punch to enlarge the pilot hole until it,s a snug fit for the piece of line your adding.

Then clean and file any rough edges and then solder the new nipple to the sending unit.

By swedging the hole to size this way instead of just drilling a large hole , it will form a shoulder which will give the connection more support .

Just look at the way the factory feed line is connected to the sending unit to better understand what i,m babbling about.

Snailpower- that is what I would have to do, except I am using the old fuel line as my return line, so it ends at the sending unit.
So I would rather not figure out how to run it all the way to the back of the tank.

chitownhustler- thanks for the heads up for how to do it right.
