I bought a trans kit from keisler and the bellhousing cracked on me. There was not preload on the trans and the bolt did not bottom out in the weld. I can add this to the LONG list of problems I've had with them. Anyone who plans to buy form shefi or keisler please take caution. They only made a few t56 swap kits for the dakota crowd and there are a few not happy with the product. Can anyone recommend a top notch shop in Baltimore/Annapolis MD that could fix this for me?

I know you wont want to hear this. But call and see if Richard is still at Keisler. I bet they would take care of it, and I would think shipping would be consumed as well.

You got any pictures of how the whole BH is designed?

I dont want to deal with keisler. Last time I sent shafi an email it was about my slave cylinder that took a dump with less than 2k miles and he ignored it.

here are some other pics

How do you know he got it? An email is not the same as calling them in person.

because we used the same eamil address not too long before. Shafi and I are not on good terms to say the least. When you have forgotten more issues then you remember, you dont want to do business with the company anymore. If they cant build it right the first time there is no way im sending it back to them to fix it.

I appreciate the kind words, but I am no longer at Keisler. I am now working for American Powertrain (www.americanpowertrain.com ).

I am still on here though trying to help out when I can. In this case, the good news is it looks like it's not the bell housing and just the weld where they attached the adapter plate to the stock Mopar bell housing. I would imagine any competent machine shop could finish breaking the weld, remove the plate and then re-weld it back in place...?

I took it to a shop and had the guy grind and weld a small seciton for me. I liked his work so he is going to grind all the welds out and weld the inside and outside. I sent Keisler an email explaining the situation and that I want to be reimbursed. I know it wont happen but its worth a shot.

Try Dave Brown at McCarters welding. He is a mopar racer as well. 443-995-0399. I believe he is in the Edgewater area.

That looks like a combination of lack of, or not enough preheat. The billet plate is quite a bit thicker than the cast housing and most of the real penetration appears to be on the cast side which is why the crack is closer to the plate side. Welding two unlike hardnesses of aluminum can be tricky without the right filler rod, the plate is more than likely 6061 or 7075, while the housing is no telling what kind of material, probably 2024. Sounds like your welder knows what he's doing though, and can hopefully salvage the piece for you.

Thats just bad prep and welding... that should have
all been V ground and a ton of pre heating... thats
2 BIG heat sinks..... any decent welding shop can fix
that for you

Cast to billit is difficult to weld, porus to dense materials, too much heat can be just as bad as not enough.Too much heat will cause expansion and shrinkage causing the weld or weaker material to crack and not enough heat will cause less penatration into the more dense of the two materials.

I've welded a few BH Bob... I use indirect pre heat

I agree it can be done Mike and we have done it quite a bit also, controlling the heat is important for a strong weld.Monitoring the heat and zone welding is the key.Welding a cast belhousing is not an issue, welding a dense aluminium plate to the cast bellhousing takes a lot more preperation and controled welding.

Good luck. I hope they get it fixed. As for getting reimbursed, I wish you a lot of luck. You can try calling and talking to Keith at Keisler. When I left, I believe he took over the customer service/tech support. He is a great guy and a friend and will do what he can to help you out. His hands are going to be tied and of course and any credits issued will have to go by Shafi's desk but it's worth a shot. Not sure if they are doing it differently now, but when I was there, they used an outside machine shop to make those plates and have them attached to the bell housings. Keisler does employ a great welder, his name is Fred. He does really good work but I'm not sure if he welded that bell or if they still use that outside shop.

Let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

Richard

I decided to go the Quicktime route for my T56.
Top quality part.
