Hi, I have a 72 Charger that I strictly drag race. I'm looking at replacing the hood and scoop. I need 9 inches of the clearance for the intake and carb. I can get the hood with a cowl scoop or a pro stock scoop. Which would be better and why? The car runs mid 10's and weighs 3200 pounds.

Cowls are for chebbies.

pro stock scoop on a 72 would look fair... a Cowl would follow the body line much nicer. You'd have to have it made so it would be more expensive that the Pro-Stock unit... I think they look fine on mopars, I mean jeesh Furd had shakers b4 mopar put them in E-bodys, what's the big deal?

I hate cowl hoods on a Mopar, any Mopar.

Sorry yuck, but they suck in my eyes.

If I'm reading into this right..........

Nine inches of clearance is a REALLY tall cowl hood!

I'd run an old vintage snorkel scoop or just a hole in the hood with a Hilborn style scoop.

Are you running a tunnel ram?

Hi, No I'm not running a tunnel ram. I am running a 440-2 Intake with a 4150 to 4500 spacer. I'm also using a 1/4 inch Shear Plate. On top of it all is a 1050 Dominator with a 6" Accell Foam Air Filter. I need 9" inches of clearance for all of this. I thought about the hole in the hood with the Hilborn but i've heard guys talk about creating vacuumn and pulling the fuel out through the vent tubes and leaning out the motor. Is there any truth to this?? Also wouldn't this mess up the aerodynamics of the car? Everyone seems to be giving me hell about using the cowl scoop. But no one has a reason other than they don't like how it looks. I'm not that concerned about how it looks but that what ever I use WORKS!!!! Any more insight would be appreciated.

that's what I was just thinking.... It's on and it's paid for. If you want to swap it for a new look google pic's of Chargers w/ hood scoops and see what you like best.

That scoop is too tall. I can't see over it to see the lights. It's also mounted on a steel hood which is really heavy. I cut it down which changed it quite a bit. Now that i'm getting a new hood I was going to have the company put one in the new hood. I just need to know which one to get. Hence the question cowl or pro stock. Someone suggested just cutting a hole in the hood and using a hillborn scoop, which i'm not against but I can't find one for a dominator carb?

I guess it comes down to what you think looks better. A few companines will make you what ever hood you like. Of you can buy a flat glass hood and mold your scoop on. I'm not a fan of t he "bug catcher" unless it has a huffer under it. Like 68-70 Chargers 71-75's never reall came with a scoop and don't really look good w/ anything mopar has to offer.

OK, more insight: they don't like the looks of the cowl hood on a mopar, that IS the reason.

If you don't care what it looks like, then the cowl is probably easiest and gives you the best view.

Check out this post from a couple of years ago.

Various scoops are discussed as well as a few photos of Mopars with cowl scoops.
