You shouldn't need a girdle for a 340 block. If you're going to making enough power to need a girdle then just go ahead and buy a race block from Mopar Performance. The race blocks are very beefy.
I've been told the same thing, however a lot of guys have 360 or 340 blocks already on hand (like I did) ready to build into a stroker or something like that. To spend 2 to 3 grand on a beefier block, and then another grand+ to bore, blueprint, etc is getting over the top as far as expenses go (for average joe).....oh yes, then you still have that 340/360 block sitting in the corner. At least that's the situation I was in, so I sprung for the girdle - i can't imagine it's a total waste of money.

I would buy the aftermarket main caps before the girdle

my thoughts aswell, those 340blocks are something better left for the restoguys realy if you are making big power. im in this situation now that i just wish i would have bought a real block before i put all the money into good mashinework on a stockblock.
