Guys,
I'm at the point where I'm bolting up the front engine/tranny/k-frame assembly into the '65 Satellite. (Yeay! Pics to follow shortly).

It appears one of the k-frame bolts got off to a bad start and is grinding against the threads in the frame. It didn't get far (2-3 turns), so I backed it out to "re-start" the bolt.

Now that the threads in the frame have suffered one "bad start", I'm having a @#%% of a time finding the "correct start" to the bolt.

Is there a reliable method to get the correct start to a bolt in this situation? My plan for now is to get a mirror, flashlight and magnifying glass to inspect the frame threads closely, see if I can figure out the damage.

Thanks, -Art

sounds like you cross threaded it , you'll need to run a tap or thread chaser thru the frame nut and a die or thread file on the bolt .

Thanks John,
I knew there was a word for it - cross threaded. That's what I suspect. I'm heading to the hardware store now to pick up a set of taps and see how carefully I can restore the proper thread in the frame. I hate making more work for myself. It ain't the first time.

A good set of tap's and die's are an indespensable tool at time's like this.

Light travels faster than the speed of sound,,,this is why some people seem bright untill you hear them speak.

Run the tap in from the top if you have access.

Patience with a little bit of luck paid off: I made one more attempt to carefully find the right thread and lucked into the right one. I gently worked it two-forwards and one-backwards when it collided with the cross-thread. Slowly but surely the bolt work in past the cross thread and went in smoothly.

Here are pics of today's labor! Kinda proud to have managed it alone. Slowly and carefully.... never underneath it without jackstands...

If possible when this happens I prefer to take a stainless bolt and grind some reliefs in it similar to what a tap has and clean up the threads with this instead of a tap because a tap will cut the threads deeper than the original threads. If you thread a nut on before grinding it will clean the threads up when you take it off.

Looks nice, great job. BTW I like to work by myself, there's always a way.
