I am putting a 727 pump together and it says to have the chamfer towards front of pump. What picture looks like it is the chamfered side? The gears also have dots on them but book makes no mention of them.

Every 727 inner rotor that I've seen has the same chamfer on both sides; general rule is to reinstall used ones in the same position they were removed.

Thats what I thought but 86-87 non lock-up are the only years that have this from what I can tell. It was apart before I got it so I am unsure?

This is the era, where there were numerous supercendences of various componets to pump assemblies. I don't have any late 80's service manuals, so I'm of no use. Try googling "727 matched pumps", or some derivative.

I just put a 727 pump together last night, 71-72 vintage, the chamfers look like the ones above but they were slightly different. Your first picture is darker than the second, but the gear and the rotor had a mark on them, the side of the gear with the mark had a smoother chamfer than the other side so I put that marked side s together and toward the converter. Trans had been rebuilt before and I didn't pay attention to which side was which when I first disassembled it to clean it, I will from now on though.
