somewhere from the downstream terminal on the dash gas gauge back to the sending unit there's a dead short to ground & I'm assuming the present sending unit in the tank was OK/is untouched then the OE gas gauge went bad & was replaced w the correct aftermarket dash gas gauge now it pegs

Im having a similar problem. My gas guage didnt work due to a bad fuel sending unit. So I put in a replacement and it was working perfectly. The car sat for 2 wks while I was out of town, and now it jumps back and forth for a while, then it will go all the way over to full and stay there. Turn the car off and restart, it will do the same scenario again. Im going to check for a short somewhere, and if ones not found I will have the sending unit replaced under warranty.
Will be watching to see what happens with you as well, in case I need to look at my guage.

If the water temp and/or oil pressure gauges are working.. Then the voltage limiter is working fine.. Essentially the fuel, water temp and oil pressure gauges are all 5V DC meters driven by the respective sending unit..
