When switching over to aluminum heads (Edelbrock Performer), do the rocker arm shafts have to be replaced or can the stock iron head shafts be used? Also, do roller rockers require a different shaft?

1 yes you can use stock rocker gear
2 depends on what roller rockers they are

As a guide the aluminum heads don't care what the shafts are as long as OD is correct but the rockers do care. Match the shafts and rockers to each other. Stock shafts and stock rockers are fine. Roller bearing rockers normally need harder/thicker wall shafts. Getting both matched by the same knowledgable vendor is best.

Yes, they can be used BUT why would you want to, they're JUNK.

Do yourself a REALLY big favor and splurge on a set of decent aftermarket shafts.

If you use a roller rocker with a bearing on the shaft (like Harlan Sharps) then you ABSOLUTELY need hard chromed shafts. For any rocker that is either iron, aluminum or bronze bushed then a standard aftermarket shaft will suffice.

Yes you need a good set of aftermarket shafts as Stanton says. Hughes has a nice set of shafts that has the extra banana shaped oiling chamfering slots next to the oiling holes and hard chromed.

Trust me, you do not want to put needlebearing rockers on chromed shafts. The needlebearings fracture the chrome and then you can guess the rest. Use hardened shafts with needlebearing rockers. You can use chrome shafts with smooth bore rockers with or without bushings.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Seems strange that the Harlan Sharp shafts are hard chromed then !!!

Their website says "specially heat treated, heavy
wall, rocker shafts." No mension of hard chrome.

Here is what Dvorak says about shafts for H.S. rockers
http://www.dvorakmachine.com/rockershafts.shtml

Racerbrown, T&D and Jessel don't use chromed shafts either with their needlebearing trunion rockers.

Don't forget to set up your valve to rocker geometry.
Also you my need new hold down bolts, and push rods.
I have had to raise and lower the shafts on Edelbrocks on different builds to get the rockers centered.
P.S. They are not bolt on.
