Low to mid 20's in top tune (critical) and relatively stock in an A-body (F M J-bodies are much heavier). MPFI and overdrive could potentially get high 20's. Get more info at www.slantsix.org.vm

My '68 Barracuda convertible is my daily driver. It gets in the mid teens with combined mountain/town driving while averaging 70+ mph on the freeways. Next week, I'm taking it from the West Coast here over the Sierra's to Reno for Hot August Nights. I can give you my freeway milage then. I expect it will be in the low 20's with it's 2.96 rear end gears and 904 automatic, but it might do better. It's been modified by Doug Dutra, who you can find on the http://www.slantsix.org/ website, with bigger valves, Super Six 2 barrel, a set of Dutra Duals(exhaust), head milled for a point higher compression, a re-curved distributor, the smaller of a Dutra spec'd cam and a few of his various tuning tricks. He is a great guy too! It probably has half again as much power as a stocker, but is supposed to get a little better mileage in this state of tune. I can attest that it certainly has WAY more power, and that the mileage has not dropped over the way it was in stock form. Now, that is a cool thing these days! And, yes, I drive it the way I want to without reguard to trying to get good mileage, because I live very close to work. Keep in mind that my milage is with the top down, which causes a much greater drag on the car especially at 70 - 80 mph. My combined mileage includes a drive over a pretty good mountain once a week to get to the beach. Another good feature about this 40 year old car, is that very few vehicles can keep up to it in the twisties. With it's freshened up and modernized suspension, sway bars, wide tires, and Koni's it corners like it's on rails without giving a harsh ride. All this without a car payment. You gotta love old Mopars! Now the important part. Let's keep the idiots in Washington from imposing another National Speed limit reduction.

2 critical areas (1)the car body 63-66 A bodies are the lightest then 67-69 A bodies & 70 & up they got progressively heavier by leaps & bounds. (2)is proper quench so you can run a HIGHER CR without pinging which on a /6 means piston/rod/ head & deck milling changes & adjustments & as mentioned Doug Dutra is THE master & a real nice guy & knows all the tricks in addition to quench that will benefit you.
live every 24 hour block of time like it's your last day on earth

One last question has anyone ever figured the difference in mpg in an A body between a mild 318 2bbl and a /6
225 2 barrel/904 2.76 7.25 got 17mpg mixed driving in my old Duster, swapped to a 318 9.2 comp, XE268 cam, performer manifold & 600 eddy carb, headers& 2.25 duals w/turbo muffs, 904 w/175k MP converter and 8.75 w/2.94's and got 17mpg mixed driving.
For straight hwy driving the 318 got better mpg, the /6 had to work pretty hard to cruise 75mph, if I had a place where I could drive 55-60 the /6 may have an advantage, I'll let you guess which combo was more fun to drive.

A lot of the slants did not get any better fuel mileage than the 318 vehicles in the day, especially in heavier vehicles.

I don't think a slant in a full size pickup would approach that mileage, especially in the mountainous terrain I drive in.
When it comes to heavy vehicles and trucks, I agree, but the poster mentioned going with a lightweight a-body for MPG, in which the slant really shines.
