How much free play should there be between the H blocks and the housing? I looked at putting in a rebuild kit but I saw the old H blocks were tore up pretty bad.

the new blocks have a slight amount of side to side play.

Any idea of a part number for the housing (or where to get one?)

The "H" blocks are spring-tensioned, as you probably already knew. On, E-Bay there are rebuild kits with new "H" blocks". I don't think the coupling housing themselves would wear, but who knows ?

Also, I believe "Flaming River" sells couplers (which may require some fitting or cutting), which eleinates the somewhat sloppy stock arrangement.

i have the rebuild kit and thats how I first noticed the problem. when i took the H blocks out, they were all scored and scratched on the thrust side. the housing had similar marks. I dont want to put the new kit into the bad housing cause it will just ruin those blocks too.

its almost $200 too.

the problem I have with it is that it seems to remove the slidein action between the coulmn and the box. so theres no way to handle changes in the distance between the box and the column caused by the body flexing because of bumps or just because of alignment issues. I think that could eventually take its toll on the steering shaft or the PS gear box

I really like that piece as well and would like to swap mine out but it dosen't look like they have one for an original manual steering car.

I would think that if you have added torque boxes or frame connectors you have eliminated the body twist that makes the play in the stock unit necessary

The flaming river piece looks like it mounts solid on both ends, leaving no free area to allow for firewall flex etc. Sooner or later may cause a problem with probably steering column. If the columns had rag joints I would not think about it.

I disagree; I don't feel any vibrations through the shaft to the steering wheel. If there were lots of movement, the factory hard brake lines from the firewall master cylinder to the frame mounted dist block would crack.

those metal brake lines are somewhat flexable (notice the little curly q's on them??) and they are close to the firewall. as you move away, the flexing get larger (moment arm) and that could break those delicate plastic retainers that are in the steering column that allow it to collapse in an accident- maybe

Removing the stock coupler and simply adding the Flaming River coupler in your picture is not a complete solution. The two parts do not share all the same functionality. The original part allowed for slight compresion and expansion which adresses the issue you are talking about. The Flaming River part functions exactly as it is intended to, but it was never designed to allow for compression and expansion of the joint. Flaming River does sell components that allow for that functionality, but you are not incorporating them into this swap when you are using just their coupler joint.

your right 426 the oem coupler did two things. i talked to the guys at Steer and Gear and they said the pwr str input shaft had to move up and down too and if it didn't the box would work???. so how would any u joint work. i guess i will find out i ordered flaming river one today. maybe it depends which column u have. my 71 a body has a spring built in beside the impact crunch zone too. i have rebuilt those coupler boxes too many times. i think the inside wears out to not just the H blocks. anybody else already done this. how did it work out

That's my pic of the 3 couplers above.
My original was kinda ugly (right). The used one I got was on the left... off a friends '78 parts car. It's the longer style. Probably would have worked anyway. Notice how I drilled it for a zerk before I bothered to check which size it was.

Being the natural screw-up I am... I put the dumb thing back together wrong and complained about being loose to myself. I then took it over to E-boogers' and got my rear end chewed out for screwing it up but it's been back together all summer now. No complaints from me.

I can grease it regularly now.

The latest from Steer and Gear is a long style rubber cap that replaces the orange or black rubber and the lousy tin cap deal that everybody has trouble with. It was $15 at the nats. I haven't put it on yet but I will eventually.

I've taken the liberty of copying a piece of the steerandgear chrysler catalog pertaining to the couplers.

i never had any trouble with them being dry. every one i have taken apart was lubed. they just get loose. too much play. i bought that boot thing at a show too. split in half when i tried to put it in. that was 15.00 wasted. the one on my Duster hits my headers when i turn the wheel.
i just want something smaller that will last longer. so i have the flaming river one on the way. i will give it a try. if it works i will buy one for my cuda too. somebody must be using them.
