Noticed some oil (quite a bit) on no.7 plug and there is evidence of leaking on the exhaust valve stem (had the headers off).

Wondering if it is worthwhile working on this in the car? (I think its only the one seal that's giving me trouble) or should I yank the engine and do the whole lot?

Never done this type of work before, but reading up on it it doesn't seem too difficult, even for a noob like myself.

Thanks in advance,

I done it with them in the car myself, but if you yank it thats a good time to install t-chain,clean,paint,regasket it as well

2 1/2 foot of rope in each cyl, hand crank it up tight to hold the valves up,hand spring compreser, use the plastic sleeve and replace all the seals 1 at a time

if one is leaking the rest are not far behind, most will be cracked, broken and falling off if never been change from stock

do a comp check first and see if it needs a valve job and if now is the time for the heads to come off,if its good then R&R of the valve seals will go a long way for it till it needs a valve job

Thanks for the advice, the rope trick is brilliant.

I will do the compression test too.

Any recommendations for a valve spring compressor tool to shaft mounted rockers? Seen a couple online (Moroso, Proline, Comp) that are quite expensive.

Anyone make their own up?

Rope works ... but if you have access to 125 psi + of air pressure .. you can put that into the cylinder. the retainer with a socket and that will loosen it up.

This looks like the ticket. But $143? (CDN)

Thinks I'll make up my own.

I use the air pressure method too--BUT make sure the piston is at TDC (I mean TOP DC) The pressure will force the piston down if its slight off and you could drop a valve.

That's what I use...didn't pay quite that much...then again, I've had it for a few years now. It's darn handy...easily handles my 320 lbs double springs.

Here's the seals I have (Seal #3). I can't tell the proper way for the teflon insert to go in. I've found them installed both ways on more than one valve.

I'm going to assume they go in with the flange down, into the second groove so it ends up flush like in the photo.
