with stock valve spring pressures, most any conventional oil in the 10w-30 or 10w-40 viscosity ranges with a zinc additive will be fine. Any auto parts store should be able to set you up with a worthwhile additive.

i have a rebuilt 400 engine that was rebuilt about 5 years ago and never ran , and last 3 days i had finally got it running in the car and it has new oil in it but believe it should be changed asap , i ran it for maybe 6 mins.i was told about additives to put in oil for these older engines but not 100% sure on it.. could someone tell me what oil weight and brand of oil is best to run in these engines.any other tips would be appreciated..
Well, if you're looking for a cost effective and easy to acquire higher zinc motor oil, check your local Wal-Mart or Advance Auto parts store for Shell Rotella T5 10W-30 HD Motor Oil. As a rule, avoid the added cost of aftermarket pour-and-pray motor oil additives.
Here's a recent Virgin Oil Analysis (VOA): 10w30 compare new Rotella T5 and standard - link
Still has plenty of robust anti-wear additives...
