I've heard of that stuff failing because the paint underneith it failed.
that was the case with my 2000 F150, the gasket failed because the paint pulled away at the seam.

What little I've used of it.....that is some nasty stuff. I wish it fail as far as the stuff that hardened on my painted surface that you can still see. Never used a primer to install. Clean up before it sets up. It makes sense that a painted surface break free before that stuff would let go of the paint. Call a paint supplier and see what they recommend. ME? I'd clean it with some lacquer thinner and git 'er done.

Yes you should use it if you want the seal to last. It is messy so you should have nitrile gloves and be wearing old clothes. The auto plant where I work(MAP), associates in that area have primer all over their work clothes.

The professional glass installer I had put the front and rear glass in my 1970 e-body used the primer. It was nasty stuff. He also used a foam stip to form a "dam" along the edge of the glass, set back about 1/3 of an inch on the inside before he applied the bead of urethane. It helped keep the glass from settling in too deep once the glass is set. It also left a nice inside appearance (not that you can really see it). He also replaced the stainless trim before the urethane set up, so the depth would match the trim's depth. It was a two man job, they were very experienced and the results are very good.

The installers I used said the butyl tape does not meet the roll over standards, and that's why they never use it. That eliminates, some liability issues for them.

..my neighbor has operated an auto glass business for 35 years..i got downsized about 10 years ago and work for/with him part time. he has installed thousands of windshields. we prime only where their is bare metal never on the glass.
we install 100s of glue in windshields a year in trucks where i work. we never use the primer unless it is bare metal. just make sure the glue is going on clean. we use laquer thinner to clean the class and the frame right before the glue is layed out.
