I have a new 496 stroker engine. (125 mi.)
I am getting 75 psi oil pressure at hot idle. Used a buddies spare gauge to check (Idles a bit high)
30 weight break in oil
Melling HV pump
My rallye dash gauge reads over high mark at 4000. I am guessing around 100 psi.
What do you think?
Thanks,

Get a softer pressure relief spring for the pump (out of a standard pump), or buy one of those Milodon externally-adjustable pressure relief springs.

or go to Advance Auto and look in the HELP section. They sell a grab bag of Copper washers , one of which is .050 thick and will thread over the plug.( you have to screw it onto the plug). Put in on top of the factory washer.

lowered my pressure about 6-8 lbs.

I think in all probability you don't NEED or WANT that HV pump!

My 71 Bee

75 psi at idle - Will creep up till about 85-90 psi if i get on the throttle - OIL COLD

45 psi at idle - 75 psi cruising down the highway - Stays at 75 psi at higher rpms - OIL HOT

Melling high volume oil pump - Been running my motor like this since engine rebuild in 1999

Oil pressure hasnt changed in 10 years - Factory gauge cluster and Auto Meter Ultra-Lites

I just helped a friend take the Melling HV pump out of his 340 and replace it with a standard Melling pump because of this same problem. It will ruin the bearings if you don't get it taken care of.

This sounds just about right to me

Best advice... contact the pump manufacture and get their opinion first before jumping to conclusions. I don't really see this as a problem...

New engine, whats the problem. Wait till its got a thousand miles on it before you do anything. My 494 has been running oil pressure like that for 5 years. My son's SRT10 pickup runs 80pds all the time. The old bearings used to wash out with high oil pressure, haven't seen it in 20 years and always suspected the conclusions back then.

I don't see the problem with your oil pressure. I have built many mopars with 100psi cold and they kept 75psi or higher hot that are still runing and have lasted for years. That myth about washing a bearing is just that, a myth. Always remember good volume and pressure it will last for ever. What is the # 1 reason for bearing failure? Lack of oil or lack of oil pressure! Do you really think all these manufactures could sell all these parts if they told us how to make things last for ever?

Some years ago Mr Personality did an oil article for National Dragster and it was most interesting.....

ALL that huge oil pressure does is coat the cyl walls and make the rings work harder than they should and LOTS of oil gets past them. AND ...it costs power to drive the rotating mass through all that oil mist and droplets PLUS it costs power to drive that pump harder than necessary.

If memory serves ... he was running 40 or 50 psi with tight(.015 or so) rod side clearance..... in a 500 inch P S motor.

stick one of these in and adjust it to whatever you want.

Where can I get one?

I think I will do an oil change and get the straight weight out of there before I do more.

I thought about switching back to a non-hv pump if that doesn't work. Just worried about this high of pressure.

Also kind of tired with the oil coming out breathers/covers all over newly painted everything.

If you are getting oil out of the engine you have crankcase pressure problems that have nothing to do with oil pressure.

Oil coming out of the valve covers is a blowby problem not an oil pressure problem. Are you running a PCV in the system or do you just have two breathers?

Big problem with strokers (ask me how I know) I pretty much have it under control But I've actually considered a vacuum pump to the engine. I'm running one now on my power brakes (off a cadillac) and it has worked good, don't know if it is strong enough for the engine though.

I'd start by installing a PCV set up in one cover to replace a breather. You need a breather on one side and the PCV on the other for cross flow.
