How hard is it to replace the front pinion seal on a 8.75 rear end? What is envolved? Can I do it with the rear end still in the car?

Thanks,

Yes it can be done whiel in the car. Swing drive shaft out of the way from the yoke. Using an inch lb torque wrench turn the pinion and measure the resistance turning it. Remove the nut and pull the yoke and pop the seal off and replace and tighten the yoke to the torque reading gotten earlier.

the in/lb torque reading may not work too well with the axles, brakes and tires installed?
When I did mine, I marked the nut, yoke, and pinion with a marker, then counted the number of turns it took to remove the nut so I could install the yoke and tighten the nut back to the same position after replacing the seal.

if its a crush sleeve its a 50/50 chance it will be ok when retorqued

if it crushes any amount it will be off and going south in short order

the 742 has a solid spacer and shims, the yoke can be R&Red and just retorque it to the correct setting

if you have a 489 with crush sleeve and have it rebuilt, set it up with solid spacers to avoid this problem of yoke change in the future

so..? is....do you feel lucky??

good luck with it

Thanks for all the help. How can I tell which rear end I have? It came in a 1971 Challenger RT - 340/auto. I'm guessing its original, ceratinly looks like 40 years of crud stuck to it.

Look on the driver's side of the chunk, it should have a casting.

I have done 5 seals this way at the shop I worked last year and they all still work perfect. You will need a good iimpact gun to loosen and retighten the pinion nut and you may need a puller to pull the yoke off . Your 71 should be a 489 case and 323/355 rear . Just check for the tag on the carrier bolts.
