Thanks guys....Strange how it keeps getting listed in the catalogs...It would be nice to have some options on this filter...Even a magnetic slip-on cover for your choice of quality filter would be nice....

Mopar makes the repo '62-'66? and early 70's filters. I was thinking awhile back of matching the green paint and have a stencil made that way I can repaint a few reproduction filters.

It would be for my own use so the question is..would mopar still be on my azz over it?

According to Mitchel NOS parts, the factory oil filter was put on before the engine was painted; therefore the filter is coated with engine paint.

Anybody know anything or have opinions about this?

Anyhow, if so, that makes it easy and saves bucks.

I also thought filters were painted along with the engine and still do.
At the Nationals last year I was docked points for my filter having orange paint on it, although I was also docked points for having the master cylinder cap painted black as well ? Although E -Body hemi bendix booster and master cylinder assemblies were painted as a unit together. Mine was NOS and painted as a unit. Go figure uh I was docked points on it, great judging. Rant over..

I bought a low mileage wreck (like 2300 miles) that had it's original green textured filter on it, it had engine overspray on it, though I can't say they all did. I think it's the only engine I ever ran across with the original filter on it.

The filter was just one of those projects that got shelved because of the bad economic times. Filter manufactures have a minimum run of 10's of thousands, they won't even look at it if you ask for hundreds. The manufacturing volumes required compared to the available market would make it a $100+ piece that you would have to sell thousands of. Not very marketable at that price for the volume you would need to sell.

Having a standalone filter made like that one isn't in the cards, however, there are people looking at an alternative that may or may not be marketable. Making the filter from scratch isn't going to happen so, what if the original style housing was made and an existing filter was inserted into it? This is something I’ve been thinking about since the first time I tried to find an original. If this can be done and keep the price around the $29 mark would it sell? A project like this still will have a decent level of expenses, a deep draw die still has to be made, filter painted and stenciled correctly, then buying all the new filters. Still not a cheap endeavor for sure.

I don’t think you’ll ever see, from scratch, this particular filter. The big question is, will the market accept this as an alternative?

Mike what about just making the exterior can to slide over a currently avail existing filter.

Then the end user simply pulls the visible exterior off of it, changes the actual filter then slides the psuedo exterior can back on.

Now obviously this only is a viable alternative IF all or at least the major filters avail all use a common outside dimension.

if something like this is in say the $20-$30 price range. I would think would sell well enough to consider it as an alternative to producing a full operational filter from scratch

Mike, I would be buying at least one, if not two for our cars if you were to do the above!

Bill I think that was what he was saying in the post above ?

Me two. I am just having trouble seeing the redish engine paint on the oil filter because of all the green that seems to be covering it.

Sooooooooo....did you overspray my Mopar filter? I'll be checking and if you didn't the final payment will be reduced drastically!

I had a new 72 Satellite Sebring Plus with a 400 and I changed the first oil filter. It was painted the Chrysler engine blue and apparently was put on by a pissed off gorilla. It would not budge with a standard filter wrench. I had to drive a screwdriver into and fought that filter for about an hour before it came off. I remember trying to see a part number on the filter but it was covered with paint too well. Just my experience.
