We have a 904 low gear set in the car my son drives. I'd have not set it up that way but it is the gear set it came with and It works just fine. If I remember correctly it is a 277 low gear set. I think rear gear and converter may be the best was to tune this. Some like the 904 low gear set in heavy cars.

My GTX was a solid 12.3 car when i changed and went about a 10th faster after that maybe a tad more. had gear out and when car was 11.00 to 10.9 put it back in and it was again a good .10 to .15 better after the change. Nice increase through first and second little bigger drop off to third gives some back stock 2.45 1st and 1.45 second low set 2.74 1st 1.55 second.

Anybody switch from standard 727 gear ratios to 904 1st and 2nd ratios and improve your et?
Without any info it's an impossible question to answer. With info it's a 75 post re-hashed arguement.
'66 Coronet, 3650 race weight, 446ci, 727, 4.56, 30x9 radial slicks - best of 10.58/125 @ 2100ft. 60ft 1.45 It was a pretty simlpe question and others were able to answer - just asking if it worked for them. Nothing to argue about either. Thank you to those who chimed in.

I agree, mine slowed around a .10-.15 when I took the low gear set out in a 9.30et car. This was the only change made was convinced by others it would go quicker with stock ratio.....WRONG.
LOL, I have heard that a time or two. I need a lower gear ratio as my car too heavy

First, according to your INFO, your car would probably benefit from the low gearset, if the car would hook. Your 60' is a tad slow for a 10.60 car; if it's spinning now, the low gearset will make it worse. Second, it's a SIMPLE question with a COMPLICATED answer, since heavy, low horsepower cars benefit more than light, high horsepower cars, and since there is no set formula that is avalible to make a choice, it's an opinionated guess at best. Since most of the posts didn't give their combos, how do you make an accurate comparison them to yours? And the arguement? There has been more posts on here than you can count debating 727 vs 904, low gears vs high gears, 'Flite vs'Glide than I can count, usually ending up being little more than typing practice, since the only "right answer" is the one that works best for YOUR COMBINATION (who would have seen that coming?).
Bottom line is, there are a lot of posts on here that people ask Q's and don't give enough info for anyone to make an EDUCATED reply. Without knowing engine specs, no one can suggest a cam (although many do). Without knowing car weight, engine specs, trans, gear ratio, etc, no one can give good advice for a converter (although many do). The more good info you give us, the better info you will get back. Some of it might even be RIGHT

Thanks for the input, you have very valid points there. I have been contemplating putting in a low gear set for a few years. I'm freshening my trans and I think I will try it. I run caltracs w/monoleafs along with their shocks and 5 inches of susp. I'm pretty confident that I won't have traction issues - there is only 1 way to find out right? Thanks again
Good luck with your project! Unfortunately, it is a lot more expensive to put the low gear set in a 727 than a 904; they start out over $500 at A&A. 904 low gear sets are dirt cheap, being OEM in about 15 years of cars and trucks.
I've already got the parts to do it. Bought them from A&A a few years ago, I think I paid 425. I will post the results.
