Hey guys! My magnum 360 that I just installed is having issues let me explain what is going on. The motor has 190 miles on it(breaking it in). Today I was out in the country breaking it in and decided to let it rip, so I got on it from a start and went all the way through the gears WOT. As soon as I let off and got back on it for cruising speeds(50mph) it was running really rough and vibrating. Took it to the house and it was barely even running. I checked for spark issues and found that it was very weak. I took the cap off the distributor and found the shaft have way way to much play in it so I replaced it with a new one and still..started it up and it barely runs. Has 60psi oil press when cruising and about 35psi at low idle in gear. No weird noises or anything. Oil is nice and clean. I checked all the spark plugs and they arent broken or anything.

P.S. Heres the motor build: magnum 360, ported rhs heads, forged pistons(9.4 compression), eddy carb, airgap intake, headers, 0.525 lift roller cam.

Thanks for all of the help guys!!!

The basics still apply. Spark, fuel and compression. Make sure that you're getting good spark to the plugs & check timing. Since it was running OK before you got on it this is probably OK, but check anyway. Sometimes a sparkplug can fail and still not look too bad at least for awhile. Same with the carb & fuel pressure. Next pull the valve covers and look for a broken spring or failed retainer/valve lock. Turn the engine over by hand or with the starter [ disable ignition ] and make sure all the valves are opening and closing properly. Do a compression check. Do all this and I think you will find the problem. Hope it's not serious. Good luck.

Sounds like valve train problems, pull the covers and you will find your problem.

Sounds like either a fuel problem, or possibly a bad vacuum leak, make sure it didn't pop an intake gasket or a hose isn't disconnected, also make sure the carb is getting fuel & didn't suck up crap in the idle curcuit.

And what did you set the timing to after you replaced the distributor?

I ask about Dist. because I bought a new Mopar piece and it worked for a few weeks, after some "sprints" It seemed inconsistant...sometimes would not start, sometimes would, then, in it's final gasp at age..5 months or so old, it wouldn't fire and I had to get towed home, very weak spark.

I stuck in the original 38 year old piece and it fire right up, strong spark, strong idle.

I have bought 2 brand new MP dist and both of the pickups inside were bad, I replaced them with used pickups and all is good. I also experienced that with a 3rd MP dist that was a friends. When you ohm them they checked out different than a stock pickup, beware.

Another thing to check is the secondaries on the Edelbrock carb. Sometimes they will hangup and cause a poor idle after getting in them especially if it has sat for anytime to cause a little varnish to buildup.

what rockers are you using? is there a fair amount of valve train clatter?

on my roller cam/mag headed 318 I built, I had an issue kinda like what you were describing. ended up being the 5/16" bolts holding some of the pedestal rocker arms worked their way loose. I ended up bending 3 pushrods with that...

torque spec on them is 21ft-lbs (when I installed them I used my inch lb torque wrench to 250). when I fixed it, I used my long handled ratchet to "tight" and havent had a problem since.
