I was just driving my 2008 / 3.8L around town here - in a 40 MPH zone. All of a sudden, the transmission seemed like it didn't want to shift into overdrive (at 40 mph, I was high revving at like 45000 RPMs

Then the check engine light came on (whats the trick to read the codes ?)

I pulled over and shut it off

no unusual smells, no leaks, no broken belt that I could see

Started up again. I turned afround to bring it home - first few shifts from a dead stop went OK, but when I got close to 40, it seemed to search for a gear and revved high again

I have just over 47K miles on the vehicle and its been serviced regularly ...

Since there is no dipstick to check - what's my options ?

What are your thoughts ? Transmission gone ???

When that happened to my '99 Dakota, it was the speed sensor on the rear axle. Easy fix in my case.

On my '04 Ram, you turn the ignition key to just before it cranks over 3 times and look at the digital odometer to view the codes.

on-off-on-off-on. Not sure if it is the same on a 2008.

The Output Speed Sensor is most likely bad or covered with metal shavings. Throw a new one in and see what happens. About $25.

Trans went into limp in mode. After you shut the car off it will drive ok untill the TCM (trans control module) sees a problem. Are you the original owner? If so it maybe warranty. Take it to a dealer so they can scan it. Ask if there are any updates (flashes) for the TCM while you are there. Those are reprogramable and the factory poss has new software so get that done. Those transmissions have most of there problems behind them so let hope it is minor. 1 tip. If its is somthing major and its not warranty. Ask for any warranty assistance, if they are no help call the chrysler 1-800 # in the back of your owners manual and ask for help. Remember to be nice, you get more bee,s with honey!

Also 80% of the time a speed sensor will turn on a check engine lamp, and poss the speedo goes out with it.

bring it to any national auto parts chain store and they can read the OBDII code for free.

My 96 Ram acted similar and it turned out to be the line pressure sensor. Easy fix.

if it shifts normally thru the fist 3 gears then acts up when it attempts to go to 4th.a speed sensor isn't going to fix it

My bet is you have internal gear train issues.

pull the pan and look for metal fragments. hopefully you got the lifetime drivetrain warrenty as I think your going to need it

My guess is without knowing what the vehicle is, all other guesses are just, well, guesses.

Well, here's the verdict and its a bad one

On the way down to the dealership, the tranny slipped a couple of times in 3rd gear

It was whining so loud, you thought I would have been driving a Police car with the siren on ...

Dealer says 4th / 5th and 6th gears are gone and verified that it slips in third

(Service writer said they had a tranny software fix and they did that (and another recall while I was there - ) and I drove it out about 300 yards from the dealership, the check engine light came back on and it was slipping all over the place

U turn

The Service Manager said, sorry, looks like your transmission is shot .... 2nd owner so there is no warranty

Best guess to fix: around $4000 .....

So I got a rental (Caliber) and it -might- be done by Friday ....

until then I'll be at www.UnHappyCamper.com

of course, I got the story that it just depends on what all they find ... as soon as its fixed, I'll be traded it in ...

Even though you still haven't said what kind of car it is, I don't know of a trans that the aftermarket or private shops get 4 grand to fix. I'd call around before I'd cut them a check.

Yeah, Fraleys did some work for us on older stuff when I worked for a resto shop in Novi. They seemed to do a good job and priced us pretty fair.

There have been quite a few problems with the new 6 speed it seems. Why is there no warranty just because you are the second owner? Can it not be transferred? Did you buy it from a dealer? I'd be screaming really load about that one, with the known issues of the 61TE tranny, they should just cover it for you. Not sure if the aftermarket is up to speed on these yet.

Chrysler Service Adviser says since I'm 2nd owner, all you get is a 3yr/36K mi and I'm at 47K so I'm screwd, The Limited Lifetime Powertrain Warranty is not transferrable. If you are the 2nd owner, all you get is a 3yr/36K mi. Now the 2010 and 2011 is different. They have a 5yr/100K mi Limited Powertrain Warranty. That stays with the vehicle. No transfer fee, good no matter how many owners, no fine print.....

The number 5 thrust bearing fails, then takes out planetary gears on some 61te trans. I am pretty sure the original lifetime warranty can not be transfered.

Seen A ton at the shop do the same thing. Darn near welds itself together. Sorry about your luck.

I think you should be loyal & trade your 08 T & C minivan in for a 2011 T & C minivan....
