How many NHRA Stockers have been in the 9's running at non-altitude (no correction factors applied) tracks? I know it's been around 10 years since Bobby DeArmond first dipped into the 9.9s at Mission, B.C., but has this become pretty common for A/S(A) (or even lower?) class cars running under the right conditions?

Quite a few of them now, maybe as many as 30-40 especially since the arrival of the DragPak Challengers and the CJ Mustangs. These days, just about any car in AA/S or AA/SA can run 9s under the right conditions. Last year at Indy, for example there were 7 or 8 cars in the 9s. Dempsey Pendarvis made maybe the most impressive run with 10.01 in his C/SA Firebird.

Dempsey was running a new drag pac at Indy last year in C. However, his firebird has run in the nines I believe in A/SA.

I'm referring to the May 6, 2001, run where Bobby DeArmond ran an uncorrected 9.997 at Mission. Everything I've seen indicates this was the first "real" 9-sec Stocker pass w/o any altitude correction factors applied.

My question was really geared more towards the "legacy" carburated Stockers, too, not the "new gen" FI cars. Those DragPak and CJ cars are killers and make the old stuff look silly at times. It's almost hard to imagine all those cars running under the same rules.

My Google results indicate that Corda's 9.97 was at the 2003 Pomona National, so about a year and a half after DeArmond's. Funny, since the page I found w/ Corda's results said he was the first into the 9's, too, even though DeArmond's run was supposedly like "The Shot Heard Round the World" in the Stocker ranks.

May 6, 2001 Bobby DeArmond made the firsr uncorected (non-altitude factored) 9-second Stock run at Mission Raceway in Canada.

Feb. 6, 2003 Al Corda runs the first 9-second run at a national event during qualifying for the Winternationals with his fuel injected Firebird.

I don't think anyone could have predicted then that Stockers would be running 9.3s at nearly 150-mph eight years later.

It was an epic battle of big block muscle cars in May of 2001 at Mission..Little's Hemi Cuda, Pond's 427 4spd Fairlane, DeArmonds Camaro and the 63 Maxi of..damn I can't remember that team tiger Mopar driver...any way its all on video and about as intense as it got to try and be the first non-altitude corected Stocker in the 9's. Great memories from that weekend!

My old M.W. 1963 415 HP Belevdere sedan was the first "stocker" to run in the nines at Firebird in Boise, Idaho in March or April, I can't remeber the date that was a factored record. I had sold the car and Joe Aluise was the new owner, Bobby De Armond was the first NHRA stocker to run in the nines unfactored at Mission several weeks later, most of the hot dogs spun the tires and barely missed being first, Bobby did not spin and became the first one in the nines Don Little in his hemi car, Gene Buehl in Al Corda old car, yellow 1964 M.W. Savoy, Joe Aluise and Robert Pond where all there wanting to be the first unfactored stocker in the nines, Bobby did it

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

Robert Pond was the first in at a corrected track.

Many cars will do it now. Sorenson has been real fast with his Camaro.

Check out the Stock/SS forum on www.classracer.com . You will normally see about 4 threads with people whining about Cobra Jets, Drag Pacs, Sorenson, and anyone faster than whomever is posting at the time.

If I'm remembering correctly on the weather conditions at Mission that day, I believe, the D.A. was around 250 below sea level Bobby went 9.99 something, barely in the nines As far as Robert Pond being the first stocker in the nines at any track, this is the first time I have heard that Maybe Robert was the first with a stick car and my old Belevdere was the first automatic car in the nines at Firebird in Biose ,ID I wasn't there I sold that car after the World finals in 1988 to someone else, he ran that car a year in the Good Guys nostalgia deal on the west coast and he restored it back to stock and sold it to the Aluise family the next year, 1990.

What you have to keep in mind in that AA/SA or AA/S or 7.5 pounds per HP were not yet implemented so there are still few Real stock eliminator cars that can run in the 9's.

The older combinations have been factored to a level that it takes incredible amounts of time and money to make a traditional A/SA or A/S go in the 9's at any elevation.

Joe Aluise?

Thanks.. I believe Aluise missed it first with a 10.00 or a 10.01 spinning the tires..a very fast Maxi to be sure..They were all right there with several .01's-03's before Bobby nailed it with a 9.99. He was tore down and determined to be 100% legal as I'm sure all the others would have been also since they were all ruuning with that "R" on the window and prepaired for tear downs should they nail the record.
