A quick Question

Do I run a fuel return???

I have a 1971 Challenger R/T. A real big block car.
When I restored the car a few years ago. I ran 2 Stainless steel lines from the gas tank to the front of the car.
Just like the factory 440 6 pack. OK factory appearing. I like the stock look.
I think I used Finelines for the manufacture. If that matters.
I bought the 3/8 inch stuff plus a 3/8 pickup.
The car has a 6 Pack on it. I have an electric fuel pump at the back of the car plus a good filter.
In front is the regulator (regulator does not have a fuel return), then to a fuel pump (factory in the block, gutted with a line
ran through it), to a 6 pack style filter with the return line barb on the bottom of the filter.
Then from the top up to the carbs. All metal lines, braided or where you need rubber to connect them.
My question is this.
Do I or can I hook up the fuel return line? To allow fuel to circulate back to the tank. The barb in the bottom of the filter
has a small hole, so there would be restriction back to the tank.
Also there is a inline filter in the return line back at the tank.
What would you guys do?

Thank you for your help.

here is how mine is. use a mallory 4309 regulator but put it after the carbs so cool fuel constantly runs past the carbs. this is how mine is set up and it works great. you just need to figure out how you want to do it if your trying to hide it

I guess more of my question would be...
Can I just increase the pressure on the regulator to compensate for the return?
Here is a photo from another car. But the filter is like mine.

years ago before i put in place the current fuel system that i run now, i tried using that stock filter setup, it didnt really work to good and guys on here told me the same thing. someone also commented that the vapor seperator filter in the pick looks the same but doesnt work the same as the originals so i scrapped it.

the way mine works will keep the fuel cool within inches of the carbs and has worked well

Yes why not? I run a stock fuel pump and the hemi VS bolted to the fuel pump on 2 cars and it works great. Just as long as the VS has the #54 orfice in the return nipple it'll work great. I have driven my 74 340 car like that many miles all over the country with all kinds of gas with no problems. Did I mention I have driven it in 95 degrees temps at 7000 ft for hours at a time?

Reno, Nv, Las vegas in July, Grand Canyon and the Bonneville salt flats all in July. I'd say that is the ultimate test on the fuel system being I drove 120 MPH on the salt flats for over 5 miles at a time and never ran out of gas.

I run a similar setup on my 470 factory vapor separator and 3/8 line with a 5/16 return. I am running the Hemi pump from Mancini and haven't had an issue yet. I have the Carter strip pump that I will put on if I do. No regulator.

Thanks for the advise. After I hook the return up. I will make a pass and watch my fuel pressure. I don't want to run out of gas.

personally, i wouldnt run the return.

if you wanted it there for looks, i would have it plugged off inside so no fuel would return to the tank.

Just curious, what could go wrong? If there were doubts, one could put a small clamp across the rubber hose between the return nipple and the steel return line blocking it off to test.

Some hot day on the street it will be so worth it, imo.

I'm a firm believer in return systems... if needed
you can put a orifice in the return rubber hose to regulate the
amount of return fuel... just drill a small hole in
a piece of brass round stock and slip it in the hose...
but if the vapor can has a orifice in it you should
be fine(depending on the flow of your ele pump)
