If it's a hemi, the entire master cylinder is painted black.
If it is not a hemi, I believe the master cylinder is painted a gray color, almost resembles what I'd call parkerizing. Most of the NOS master cylinders I've seen for '71-'74 had this finish. I've seen some later NOS cylinders that had gold cad plated caps, but I don't think that is what they used in the early '70's.

If you have the Midland Ross booster (that was plated orig )on my late 71 car it had a parkerizing on the lid but the master looks natural finish. The orig parkerizing may have worn off but it was a orig 26k mile car when I got it in 84.

Not that anyone cares about a 73 but that's the way mine was. Zinc Dichromate booster, natural master and natural(possibly phosphated?)cover.

I'm pretty sure now that the cover was NOT plated. The origonal cover had an even amount of surface rust all over it. I don't remember seeing any plating present. I noticed while cleaning up my fasteners that the plating is hard to get off completely.(even when bead blasting) If the lid had been plated, I'm sure some traces of it would have still been visable.

I do have the Midland Ross booster that is cad plated. Is there any way to replicate this "parkerizing" that you refer to? Thanks to all for the info. and replies so far.

Some have used a product called Tool Black. I've had very nice results with a Black Oxide kit from Caswell Plating. By experimenting with dip times, you can produce a gray color that looks like phosphate. You could also send your lid out to be re-phosphated.
