So I know how the 4 speed vertigate, and v gates work. But I was looking at picking one of these shifters up in case a certain other 5 speed is made. The 4 speeds have reverse lever, but this shifter seems not to. So is 5th and reverse in a 3rd throw?

The shifter Ive had worked the same as the 4 speed one. When you shift from 4th, just like before push forward for 5th. Reverse was straight back from 5th. You have to let the gates drop down too the 5th level and pull back for reverse. Thanks, Ken
What transmission was this on ?

My Long V-gate 5-speed does not have a reverse lever and neither does the Hurst unit.Reverse is straight back from fifth when the gate lever is all the way down. This is on the Nash,Richmond,G-force,and new Liberty 5-speed econo tranny. I don't know what tranny the OP is talking about The Mcleod unit uses an internal rail setup and the Passon unit has it's own shifter but you may be able to adapt a Long or Hurst unit to it Gus

So, how hard is it to get into reverse, if you aren't in 5th? the vertigate I have now, actually says "long" on the mechanism! I am assuming the passon unit could take the v gate 2 with a custom mount, or use the one from my current 833, and some custom rods. The only reason my Valiant isn't a 5 speed is because I cant keep my cool shifter

How hard is it to put the shifter in neutral? The shifter mechanism will drop to shift to 5th or reverse
I have no clue, my shifter only has 2 gates, and is easy to find neutral, but I have a lever for reverse.
I hope its as easy as neutral, and then it drops to the bottom gate for 5th and Rev.
But then it makes me wonder what its like for down shifting.

I can only speak for mine, but it's a pro shifted trans and it doesn't like down shifting, no problem with the shifter just the trans. If your thinking of v-gate for the street I think it would be a pain in the butt if you did any amount of street driving.
it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

I do it all the time in the summer with 4 gears, I'm just hoping adding a 5th doesnt make it a pain!
But the trans has to be released, and I have to get a shifter too!

Jamie is being very tight lipped about the design of his transmission so if I would guess its on the same shifter lever as reverse like a Nash or Richmond The Long shifter will not bolt in place of the Hurst type bolt pattern that I believe Jamie is using on his transmission. I do have a spare Long shifter plate for Nash/Richmond trannys if you need it for a pattern to fab your own plate for the Passon tranny.I purchased my tubing for linkage from Liberty's up in Taylor Mich.I Just used the 3/8" rod ends from Summit and other hardware from Long shifters. It's alot of work but when you have it done and are pounding the crap out of your new tranny it's all worth it. I also have LH and RH taps if you need them just drop me a PM Gus

my only worry is the throw will be reversed for the 5th/R and screw up the pattern. I sent Jamie a PM asking about when they'll be ready, and how 5th and R are shifted. Can you feel the gates when you lift the t handle on your shifter? Its a no brainer with mine to down shift, not like I do it all that often, but it is kinda fun! Thank you for the offer, we'll see if things pan out. I think it'd be pretty sweet to actually get my car on the interstate! And yes bangin gears back n forth is the best!

It's pretty simple to change the pattern, just flip the lever around The Richmond has almost the same size detent and spring as a factory 833 trans. so you can sorta feel it when shifting slow. Gus

in-car video of my Brother In Law Emilio (mr5speed). His setup is a Long V-gate 5 speed with clutch for every change. The tranny in the Duster at the time of this video was a Liberty 5 speed but he has switched now to a GForce GF5-R 5 speed with the clutch still needing to be stepped every time. Enjoy.
Thanks for the video!

Doh! I should have known that I've had a few 80's OD 1/2 trucks!
Heck I could probably use the 4 speed shifter, and make the reverse lock out lever my "secret gear handle"
I've been thinking of making new linkage for my 4 speed anyway, perhaps I should do that instead of dreaming online all night
