Do I need the "special gun" for applying this stuff? I have a schutts gun, I use it for applying other kinds of undercoatings. It works fine.

Any other tips would be appreciated.

Yes I have but I want real world advice, from guys who have sprayed it. Naturally they tell ya to buy their gun and "kit". Ive been in the business long enought to know thats a plow to buy more stuff from them.

Chrysler tell us all the time to buy the Miller special tool, when the job can be done with tools you have already.

And advice will be appreciated.

The local Lizardskin dealer I ended up purchasing from had one of the LizardSkin spay guns they rented out. The gun itself looked to be identical to the Schulz gun I have. The pick-up tube/cap appeared designed specifically to fit the 2 gallon tubs the product comes in however. If I do it again anytime soon, I will certainly give my Schulz gun a shot at it, no reason I can see it wouldn't work.

Tips; follow the instructions. Spay it on dry, in multiple coats to achieve desired thickness. My instinct at first was to apply it like undercoating, get good coverage/thickness on the first coat. Picked up some runs that puddled up a bit in the low spots where then some splitting/cracking developed after completely drying.

Well you catch a bunch of Gecos, skin them, and delicatly lay the skins out on your car for a stealth mode affect.

Kasey

But on a serious note, its really good undercoating/heat resistant coating.

Lizard Skin ( http://www.lizardskin.com/ ) is a trade name for a spray on insulation products. I used two different formulas on this car, first was their SC (sound control) applied to the floor pans and firewall. The CI (Ceramic Insulation- more thermal than sound) product went on the underside of the roof and over the top of the SC on the floors, firewall, and under the plenum chamber. It was kind of an afterthought, my paint guy spent a bit of time on those floor pans/firewall.
BTW, the flash on the photo's makes coloring appear much lighter than it really is, it's black.

Good points Kasey, I was also reading up on Shakey's build over on dodgecharger.com he used it as did other members. I think I'll be using the same stuff after I apply a layer of Rust Bullet on the interior.

So you sprayed it inside and out?

how much did ya use?

I bought a 2 gallon pale, and a 1 gallon pale of the ceramic stuff.

Inside the passenger compartment only, used one two gallon tub of the SC (I bought two not knowing what it would take-returned one unopened afterwards) on the floors from under the back seat and up to the top of the firewall. I bought 1 two gallon tub of the CI as well for the underside of the roof and the underside of the plenum chamber. Had roughly half of that two gallon tub left when I was satisfied with the roof and plenum coverage and decided to go over the SC with what was left. In the end, I used 2 two gallon tubs, 1 of each formula. Likely could have gotten away with just 1 gallon of the CI. Car was still on the rotisserie at the time, made it much easier.

Thanks, very informative.

I bought a 2 gallon tum of the SC, and 1 gallon tub of the CI. Im goint to spray the underside with the SC, and the inside with CI.

Its still on the roticery also.

I went the bed liner route for the bottom of the car, with an attempt to color match to body color, with addition standard undercoating in the wheel wells.. I had the impression at the time the Lizardskin products weren't really durable enough for external use, could be mistaken.

Well I read in a lot of hot rod forums, and Tracy on Gears recomended it as he has used it on a few trucks. Now he beats the crappo outa the stuff he builds and he accually drives them, so I would say it should be fine.

Shameless plug for my video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LD-oChMpSqM

As I mentioned in the video, my kit came with their gun. But I would think a body shutz gun would work just fine. As mentioned before, put on thin, dry coats. You are not really 'spraying' this stuff...The compressed air is sort of 'flinging' it, in a somewhat controlled manner.

Good luck - It seems like great stuff!
