I just replaced the cam position sensor to fix an oil leak. After I got it together it cranked for a bit and started (not normal) and gave a p 0340 code which is...cam position sensor. I put the old one back on to make sure the fault wasn't with the new part and got the same problem. I didn't have this before I changed the part. There is a bit of oil in the electrical connectors and someone suggested this could be the problem and to use some mass airflow sensor cleaner to remove the oil.

Could this be it (oil contamination)? Otherwise I don't know.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to clean the connections. I have had water get in them when washing the engine and it will cause problems. But I have seen them pretty well oil soaked without having any issues.

That oil leak is very common. Usually cleaning the little o-ring and applying Hylamar will fix it.

Also, make sure one of the leads didn't break. They can get brittle and as short as they are they must be strained a good bit to get the plug off the sensor.

Master, again and still

Thanks. I will add that driveability is fine, just as normal. I just have to crank it a bit to start and have the cel for code 0340. I will check the wires again as soon as I can and get some cleaner for the connection.

The o-ring on the old one was basically nonexistent; the new one has what looks like a teflon o-ring type seal (blue). There isn't a paper spacer. I will get some cleaner tomorrow. Someone suggest mass airflow cleaner so I will try that.
