i just bought a 71 Duster auto trans and it has a cast iron piece on the rear of the tail shaft housing bolted to the housing.Its u shaped to fit around the housing and flat on the bottom. I have never seen this before does anybody know what this is for and can I remove it and not hurt anything?

I've seen them but don't recall what they are for.

I think a vibration damper or something.

Yes you can remove it.

Yeah its a damper... its put on certain vehicles to
change a frequency... it can be removed

Very common on late B body cars ( Cordoba's ) and I'm sure others. I had 2 -79's and they both had the tailshaft weights attached to 727's. On or off, didn't seem to make any difference to me .
