I know driveshafts are balanced, but would a shallow dent about 1" diameter cause any vibrations????

Not for sure, but probable. If you have a dent and vibration I would suspect that's the problem.

the drieshaft is balanced with weights to set the center of gravity and center of weight to spin smoothly. if you dent the driveshaft or if you have extra stuff (mud, etc) on it, it will throw off the balance, and cause a vibration...
bottom line: yeah, the dent is probably causing your vibration.
i just replaced my driveshaft..check out denny's driveshafts in upstate NY...does a good job and prices are decent.
hope this helps.
