I have my 68 charger apart and am trying to determine if the steering box is bad before I put everything back together. There seems to be a fair amount of play in the box but I don't know if that is because it is worn or because the power steering pump is not pressurizing it. Should there be slack in the gear box when the pump is not running?

There will be some slop, because as you stated, it's not "pressurized",....this is the time to install a FIRM FEEL III PS box in your car, pony up the coin, you'll see it's the best steering mod you can perform

If you tighten the lash, and go directly from "slop" to "numb" - it is shot.

A good one has zero lash without the binding feel.

Has anyone tried the Firm Feel steering box? Are they worth the money?

Don't waste your time and money buy buying a Firm Feel stage I or II box,...go directly to the Firm Feel III,...a little more money, but worth it

I got a FIRM box from Steer and Gear last summer and it is great. What a difference from the original box and well worth the $. I don't think you could go wrong with Steer and Gear or Firm Feel.

Brian, I know nothing about that seller.

Have you checked with Steer and Gear for a quote, they do manual
as well as power boxes. Good folks to deal with.

Yeah, just checked. Looks like $285 + $100 core from steer and gear. Not sure what the extra $140 gets ya.

I'm thinking that price is for a power box and the 140 is for
an upgrade on the power box. Call and get a quote for YOUR
application.

I ended up replacing the Steer and Gear box ($425 ) for a Firm Feel III in my Daytona, the Stear & Gear basicaly fell apart, the main selector shaft blew out, the case was junk afterwards, I only got about 2 yrs out of the box, The Firm Feel has been in about 4 yrs now...

IMHO the Firm Feel "feels" alot better in responce/seat of the pants driving than the Steer and Gear ever did, and I've driven a few other cars equipped with Steer & Gear,...don't quite match the "feel" of the Firm Feel box

You're right, the $385 total looks like it's a power steering box. The $ 140 I mentioned was the different between the $385 and the ebay seller's manual box. I just emailed Steer & Gear for a price quote. I need a decent manual box for a drag car..nothing fancy, just no slop.

There should be play in the steering gear everywhere but fully centered. Read a FSM, it has good instructions on how to adjust both worm gear bearing preload and chuck/sector mesh. It's easy to do out of the car and not bad installed. Whatever you do, don't go adjusting the sector (locknut/screw thingy) without reading the instructions. If you adjust out the clearance in the wrong place you can permanently damage the box when you turn the steering wheel. The only slop you can't adjust out is the fit between the worm gear and chuck, that clearance is set by the diameter of the recirculating balls.
