A friend of mine hit me up about swapping out his cam in his 88 Ram charger to get more torque for towing and off-roading and looking back at a motor I built for off-roading I remember the Lunati I picked worked real well. That cam was around .450 lift and had 218 degs. dur @ .050 iirc so being this is a T-body 318 w/35`s and 4.56`s, what do you guys think would pick up the torque and hp. I`m thinking about something similar to the Lunati but maybe a bit more dur. like maybe .220-.225............Any thaughts? Thankxxx..........

I wish I could remember the cam I put in the motor in my Satellite, but it was too many years ago, seven or eight. The motor is a 318 out of a 78 or 79 Dimplomat with an Edelbrock intake and a 600 Holley. I know it was a Comp, maybe the 20-212-2 because the .454" lift seems familiar. If it is, it has a duration at .050" of 218. I chose the cam at the time, just out of high school, for a good sound. Back then I didn't realize it was too much cam for the motor, especially with a 2.76 rear gear. I guess I learned the hard way that bigger definitely isn't always better, but it sure sounds good lol.

I run that cam in my 318 and it runs great, currently running an open 2.76. Upgrading to an 8 3/4 w/3.55's.

I went with mild duration to build low/mid range torque. I had 3.23:1 gears and 29" tall tires, so 55 MPH is only about 2100 RPM, and 80 MPH is only about 3,000 RPM. The Engine simulation software shows a fairly flat torque curve from 1,000 to 4,500 RPM, with a peak of 413 ft/lbs at 3500 RPM. Because the torque curve starts dropping off after 4,500 RPM peak HP is only 324 at 4,500 RPM.
FWIW the hughes HEH1523AL cam durations at 0.006" measured out to be 269/277. At 0.008", 262/271, at 0.050 215/223, at 0.200", 130/140.
